A green Shoot will sprout from Jesse’s stump, from his roots a budding Branch. The life-giving Spirit of God will hover over him, the Spirit that brings wisdom and understanding, The Spirit that gives direction and builds strength, the Spirit that instills knowledge and Fear-of-God.
– Isaiah 11:1-2, The Message
I grew up in Central Texas, where there were 4 seasons, though we never had more than 2-3 days in a row of snow on the ground. Plants grew well there, as evidenced by family farms that went back generations.
I don’t remember seeing plants growing in out of other plants there. I mean, weeds between flowers, sure. But here in Florida plants just grow in the craziest places. All. Year. Round. Persistent hope springs up that way. A weed on top of the rocks, a fern half-way up a tree, grass in the rain gutter…. Life finds a way.
Hope springs up from the House of David, something good did come from Nazareth. The breath of God that brought light and life to all creation still breathes into all the nooks and crannies of this world – powerful, beautiful, whimsical and wise.
