Poetry Month Day 26- Of Walls and Neighbors

Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
said Mr. Frost when
considering whether
good fences really do make good neighbors

Something there is in us that loves a wall
to keep left from connecting with right
to clarify who is in or out, us and them

We stack assumptions and judgments
atop misunderstanding and ignorance
Faces peek over,
voices seep through cracks that appear
as experience heaves and rocks
foundational beliefs

Something there is that will not tolerate the walls
we so carefully build around our hearts

*with inspiration from Robert Frost’s Mending Wall
