Poetry Month Day 25- Lessons (not) learned

how hard can it be
to avoid stepping in it
when you see it from a distance
tell yourself to stop
to go carefully around it
to stay back from the edge.

And yet, here I am
waist deep in the muck
knowing that even when I climb out
the nasty footprints
will leave a path from the mess
right to me
as surely as a GPS
or the red glow of embarrassment

No amount of OxyClean
or ElbowGrease
will do it.
Only time and grace
and love that endures forever
can remove shame and loathing
and set my feet
on the path of righteousness.
