Easter Sunday Poetry Pro – Hymn Edition

This song is taken from the old hymn ‘Oh Glorious Day’ written by Rev. John Wilbur Chapman (1859-1918).  I’m not sure who did the updated version first, but I remember being captivated by the combination of words and voice when I heard Todd Agnew sing it a few years ago.  It took me a while to place the lyrics, but then I remembered singing the old hymn version at the church where I grew up.

Todd Agnew’s version actually saved Easter for me about 3 years ago.  Our pastor opted not to preach a particularly Easter-oriented sermon, and because I attended the more contemporary service even the music did not bring me to a true celebration of the day.    A couple of days later, I was listening to the local Christian radio station and Glorious Day came on.  I started singing along and later realized that I was crying- with joy.

May we all experience the transformative power of Christ as we celebrate his life, death and resurrection- every week, but especially today.

Glorious Day

One day when Heaven was filled with His praises,
One day when sin was as black as could be,
Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin,
Dwelt among men, my Example is He!

And living, He loved me;
dying, He saved me;
Buried, He carried my sins far away;
Rising, He justified freely forever;
One day He’s coming—O glorious day!

One day they led Him to Calvary’s mountain,
One day they nailed Him to die on the tree;
Suffering anguish, despised and rejected:
Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He!

And one day the grave could conceal Him no longer,
One day the stone rolled away from the door;
Then He arose, over death He had conquered;
Now he’s ascended, my Lord for evermore!

Living, He loved me;
dying, He saved me;
Buried, He carried my sins far away;
Rising, He justified freely forever;
One day He’s coming—O glorious day! O glorious day!

One day the trumpet will sound for His coming,
One day the skies with His glories will shine;
Wonderful day, my beloved ones bringing
Glorious Savior, this Jesus is mine!

Living, He loved me; dying, He saved me;
Buried, He carried my sins far away;
Rising, He justified freely forever;
One day He’s coming—O glorious day
