National Poetry Month Day 20-Drawing a Blank

I mocks me, the blank white page
staring back, as if to say

Not Today

Today, there will be no splotches
no strikethroughs
no eraser crumbs

Today, there will be no metaphors
no turns of phrase
no clever puns

Today there will be no crafting
no taming of wild imagination
no wordsmithing

Only white
with perfectly spaced blue lines
except the last one that just squeezed onto the page
and the red margin that protects left words
from falling through the holes into oblivion

Until the pencil scrapes
leaving a ragged grey trail
that turns in on itself them moves forward again
drawing the eye toward its next loop
like a contrail behind an aerobatic flyer

Or perhaps a more daring pilot
who survived a mid-air duel
unafraid to do battle

Today
