>Parenting 101

>

A couple who recently joined our team at work had their first child this week. An adorable little rascal! I honor of this joyous new beginning, I thought I would joy down what I have learned in 15 years of perfectly imperfect parenting. To be a good mom or dad, remember to
  • Love them.
  • Pray for them.
  • Pray for you.
  • Love them some more.
  • Cry over them.
  • Find someone who will listen when you whine.
  • Believe that God is the only one with any power over them.
  • Breathe and trust God.
  • Doubt anyone who says it’s easy and they’re kids are perfect.
  • Pray some more.
  • Love some more.
  • Keep chocolate around. Beer or tequila are good, too (if you can drink responsibly).
  • See as separate, not as an extension of you. Unless you’ve adopted a ventriloquist’s dummy, you can’t control what comes out of that sweet little mouth. Notice, react and correct, but don’t own your child’s mistakes.
  • Find a village to help you do the raising.
  • Watch them sleep once in a while. Peace is good.
  • Laugh with them whenever possible.
  • Be silly.
  • Be real.
  • Be strong and protective.
  • Cry, apologize, and be weak.
  • Be present.
  • Be love incarnate.
