Car Talk

Not the NPR call-in show (which I love, btw) but the sort of car talk that happens when I’m driving the Boy someplace and he doesn’t think before he starts talking. One topic leads into another, mostly through random non sequiters, but then suddenly he’s talking about what really matters to him. Suddenly the masks are gone, the barriers are down and he’s just a young man, talking to his mom about life and what’s hard and what’s good and what teachers are making him nuts.

It’s nice. And then we come inside. And the secrecy and guardedness and closed doors return.
I don’t want to live in a car, but I wouldn’t mind spending more time there. Just talking.
